Unless someone is actively electronically "watching you" the risk is relatively small of your password falling into the wrong hands. There is an online automotive forum that I participate on where I get this warning. The same applies for other webpages that ask for username and password that don't use There are a number of sites that were coded ages ago that fall into this category. For myself, I don't worry about this when dealing with my modem-router since the traffic related to it never exits my local area network. If your modem-router presents a pop-up login dialog you generally don't get the warning you describe. You will get this message occasionally on web pages that do not use (look at what shows up in your browser's address bar) and that request a username and password if those are requested directly on the webpage presented that is not using protocol.
